Engineering Council Of South Africa

The Engineering Council of South Africa is a statutory body established to regulate the engineering profession in South Africa. The council operates under the Engineering Profession Act and is responsible for registering engineering professionals, technologists, technicians and certificated engineers across all engineering disciplines. Its mandate includes setting and maintaining professional standards, ensuring competence and ethical conduct among registered practitioners, and protecting the public interest through quality assurance of engineering work. The council accredits engineering education programmes at universities and technical institutions to ensure they meet prescribed standards for professional registration. It maintains several categories of registration, including professional engineer, professional engineering technologist, professional engineering technician and professional certificated engineer, each with specific educational and experience requirements. The Engineering Council of South Africa works closely with industry bodies, academic institutions and government departments to promote engineering excellence and address skills development needs in the sector. It also represents South African engineering professionals internationally through affiliations with regional and global engineering organisations. The council plays a key role in addressing infrastructure challenges and supporting economic development through the regulation and advancement of engineering practice in South Africa.
