French President Emmanuel Macron is leading G7 partners towards a statement on critical minerals that could include measures to reduce Western reliance on China and shield investors from counter-measures and dumping, diplomats say. The June 15 to 17 summit in Evian-les-Bains is discussing price supports, market standards, subsidies and guaranteed purchases to scale up private investment in critical mineral supply chains outside China, following Beijing's 2025 export curbs on permanent magnets made of rare earths.
France joins Square Kilometre Array Observatory as fourteenth memberFrance became the fourteenth member of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory in June 2026 after President Macron signed accession documents in March, doubling the international organisation's membership since its 2021 establishment. The country has established the Extreme Computing Lab for Astronomical Telescopes to handle data challenges from the radio telescope arrays in South Africa and Australia, and French computing specialist Bull was awarded its first SKA construction contract last year to produce science data processing hardware.
Macron co-hosts first France-Africa summit outside Francophonie in NairobiMacron and Kenyan President William Ruto co-hosted the Africa Forward summit in Nairobi in May 2026, the first such event France has held in an English-speaking country, with more than 30 African heads of state attending. The summit announced €23-billion in new investments and focused on reshaping economic ties, financial reforms and reducing Africa's borrowing costs, with Ruto set to attend France's G7 summit in June to advance proposals on credit risk architecture and first-loss guarantee mechanisms.
