EDF

EDF (Électricité de France) is a French multinational electric utility company headquartered in Paris. The company is one of the world's largest electricity producers and Europe's leading energy company, with operations spanning electricity generation, transmission, distribution, trading and energy services. EDF is majority-owned by the French state, which holds approximately 84% of its shares, and is listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange. The group operates a diverse generation portfolio including nuclear, hydroelectric, thermal and renewable energy facilities across Europe, the United Kingdom, North America, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. EDF is the world's largest operator of nuclear power plants, managing France's fleet of 56 reactors that supply about 70% of the country's electricity. Through its subsidiary EDF Renewables, the company has expanded significantly into wind, solar and battery storage projects globally. In Africa, EDF has developed renewable energy projects including wind and solar installations in South Africa and other markets. The company employs approximately 165,000 people worldwide and generates annual revenues exceeding €140-billion. EDF was established in 1946 following the nationalisation of French electricity and gas companies after the Second World War.

SOLAR MILESTONE: The Mooi Plaats Solar PV project, in the Northern Cape, entered into commercial operations last month. The facility has been built by Envusa Energy, a venture jointly owned by Anglo American and EDF power solutions. The electricity is being wheeled through the national grid under contracts with Valterra Platinum, De Beers and Kumba Iron Ore. Mooi Plaats is the first of three Envusa projects to enter into commercial operations, with two 140 MW projects to follow this year.
