Ecuador

Ecuador is a country located on the north-western coast of South America, bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The capital is Quito, while Guayaquil is the largest city and main commercial hub. With a population of about 18-million people, Ecuador has a diversified economy historically dependent on petroleum exports, agricultural products such as bananas, shrimp and flowers, and increasingly mining. The country uses the US dollar as its official currency, having adopted it in 2000 following a severe economic crisis. Ecuador is a democratic republic and a member of regional organisations including the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. The mining sector has grown in strategic importance, with significant copper, gold and silver deposits attracting international investment, though development has often been accompanied by environmental and social concerns. Ecuador's economy also benefits from its position as a major oil producer in South America, with hydrocarbons accounting for a substantial share of government revenue and export earnings. The country is named after the equator, which runs through its territory, and includes the Galápagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site of global ecological significance. Ecuador gained independence from Spain in 1822 as part of Gran Colombia, becoming a fully sovereign nation in 1830.
