Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation occupying the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. Its capital and largest city is Santo Domingo. With a population of about 11-million people, the Dominican Republic has a diversified economy driven by tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and mining. The country is a significant producer of gold, silver, nickel and other minerals, and has emerged as a focus for critical minerals exploration, particularly rare earth elements important to the energy transition and semiconductor industries. The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican peso as its currency. The country operates as a representative democracy with a presidential system of government. It is a member of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the Central American Integration System and the Organization of American States. The Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti in 1844, having previously been under Spanish colonial rule until 1795 and briefly controlled by France before Haitian unification in 1822.
