Djibouti

Djibouti is a small country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somalia to the south-east, with a coastline along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The capital and largest city is Djibouti City. The country has a population of about one-million people and maintains a strategic position at the entrance to the Red Sea, controlling the Bab el-Mandeb strait that connects the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. Djibouti's economy is heavily dependent on its port facilities and logistics services, which handle cargo for landlocked Ethiopia and serve as a major transshipment hub for the region. The country hosts several foreign military bases, including facilities operated by France, the United States, China and Japan, reflecting its geopolitical importance. The currency is the Djiboutian franc, which is pegged to the US dollar. Djibouti operates as a presidential republic and is a member of the African Union, the Arab League and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. The economy also benefits from foreign direct investment in port infrastructure, free-trade zones and renewable energy projects. Djibouti gained independence from France in 1977 and has since positioned itself as a regional logistics and security hub, though it faces challenges including high unemployment, limited natural resources and vulnerability to drought.
