Dina Pule

Dina Pule is a South African politician and former Cabinet Minister, previously serving as Minister of Communications in the ANC-led government. She rose through African National Congress structures, including involvement with the ANC Women's League, before being appointed to national executive office. Pule's tenure as Communications Minister became notable for a widely publicised ethics controversy involving conflicts of interest connected to a telecommunications industry event, which led to a parliamentary ethics committee finding against her and her removal from Cabinet. The scandal significantly affected her political standing and became a reference point in South African discourse on accountability and governance within the ANC. Since leaving national office, she has remained a lesser-profile figure in ANC and Women's League circles. Pule's case is frequently cited in discussions of political ethics, conflicts of interest and Cabinet accountability in South Africa. Her earlier career included work within the ANC's provincial and national structures prior to her ministerial appointment. She is often referenced alongside other Government of National Unity-era and ANC political figures when discussing historical instances of maladministration. Her legacy in public discourse centres largely on the fallout from the ethics finding rather than substantive policy achievements. She remains a recognisable name in South African political history relating to Cabinet-level accountability.

Pule's Cabinet return sparks lifestyle-audit demand

President Cyril Ramaphosa's appointment of Dina Pule as Social Development Minister, part of a wider Cabinet reshuffle involving Democratic Alliance (DA) deployments, has drawn sharp criticism. The DA has written to the director-general in the Presidency and the secretary to Cabinet demanding an immediate lifestyle audit, citing Pule's past Public Protector findings of maladministration, a parliamentary reprimand for bringing Parliament into disrepute and R10-million in unlawful payments, including R6-million benefiting her boyfriend.

ANC Women's League defends appointment as opposition parties condemn it

The ANC Women's League has welcomed Pule's return, with secretary-general Nokuthula Nqaba calling her an exemplary candidate who underwent a corrective process 13 years ago. ActionSA labelled the appointment a sign the ANC is "scraping the bottom of the barrel", while Corruption Watch called it a "slap in the face" for accountable governance given the department's oversight of grants for about 28-million South Africans.

Portfolio committee praises Pule's oversight record

Portfolio Committee on Social Development chairperson Bridget Masango welcomed the appointment, noting Pule's experience chairing the Agriculture portfolio committee, where she oversaw the department's response to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak and farmer compensation concerns in the Free State.
