Department Of Agriculture

The Department of Agriculture is a government ministry responsible for agricultural policy, regulation and development within its jurisdiction. In the South African context, the department oversees the country's agricultural sector, including crop production, livestock management, biosecurity, food security and rural development. Its mandate encompasses the promotion of sustainable farming practices, support for commercial and smallholder farmers, and the regulation of animal and plant health. The department works to ensure compliance with international standards for agricultural exports and manages disease control programmes, including responses to outbreaks such as foot and mouth disease. It collaborates with entities such as the Agricultural Research Council and Onderstepoort Biological Products to advance research, veterinary services and vaccine production. The department also administers agricultural subsidies, disaster relief for farmers and land reform initiatives. Parliamentary oversight is provided through bodies such as the Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources. The department's work spans all provinces, addressing regional challenges in areas including North West, Gauteng, Northern Cape and Free State. Its activities are central to maintaining the competitiveness of South Africa's agricultural exports and ensuring domestic food supply. The department has evolved through various restructurings and name changes since the establishment of agricultural administration in South Africa.
