City Of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane is a metropolitan municipality in Gauteng province, South Africa, and one of the country's eight metropolitan municipalities. It serves as the administrative capital of South Africa, encompassing Pretoria, the seat of national government, along with surrounding towns and townships. The municipality is the largest in area among South Africa's metros, covering approximately 6 368 square kilometres. It is home to an estimated population of more than three-million people and serves as a major economic hub, hosting government departments, foreign embassies, research institutions and a diverse industrial base. The City of Tshwane is governed by a metropolitan council elected through proportional representation, with service delivery responsibilities including water, sanitation, electricity, roads, housing and waste management. The municipality has faced recurring challenges with water infrastructure, particularly in areas such as Hammanskraal, where supply interruptions and quality concerns have drawn national attention. It is supplied by bulk water utilities including Magalies Water and manages its own reticulation networks. The metro's economy is anchored by public administration, manufacturing, finance and services sectors. The City of Tshwane was established in December 2000 through the amalgamation of several local councils, including the former Pretoria City Council, and was named after the Tshwane River that flows through the region.
