City Of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg is the metropolitan municipality responsible for governing Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city and economic hub. It is one of eight metropolitan municipalities in South Africa, established in 2000 following the amalgamation of several local authorities in the greater Johannesburg area. The municipality operates under a mayoral executive system, with an elected mayor and a municipal council responsible for legislative and oversight functions. Its mandate encompasses service delivery, infrastructure development, urban planning, public transport, housing, and economic development across the metropolitan area. The City of Johannesburg administers a budget of several billion rand annually, making it one of the country's most significant public-sector entities. Key functions include managing water and electricity distribution, waste management, road maintenance, and public safety through the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department. The municipality oversees several entities and agencies, including the Johannesburg Development Agency, Johannesburg Roads Agency, and City Power. It is responsible for a population of more than five million people across an area of approximately 1 645 square kilometres. The City of Johannesburg plays a central role in South Africa's economy, as Johannesburg generates a substantial share of national GDP and hosts the headquarters of major corporations, financial institutions, and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Since its establishment, the municipality has faced challenges including service delivery backlogs, financial sustainability, and infrastructure maintenance, while also pursuing initiatives in urban regeneration, public transport expansion, and economic inclusion.
