Chad

Chad is a landlocked country in north-central Africa. The capital is N'Djamena. With a population of about 17-million, Chad's economy is heavily dependent on oil exports, which account for the majority of government revenue, alongside agriculture and livestock herding. The currency is the CFA franc, shared with several other francophone African nations. Chad operates under a presidential republic system, though it has experienced prolonged periods of authoritarian rule and political instability. The country is a member of the African Union and the Economic Community of Central African States. Chad has significant strategic importance in the Sahel region, serving as a key partner in international counterterrorism efforts against militant groups operating across the Sahel and Lake Chad basin. The nation has maintained close historical ties with France, its former colonial power, though recent geopolitical shifts have seen growing interest from other international actors including Russia and China. Since independence in 1960, Chad has faced recurring internal conflicts, coups and cross-border tensions, alongside challenges related to poverty, food insecurity and climate change affecting the Lake Chad region.

ISWAP expands into northern Cameroon's Darak district

Islamic State West Africa Province has been exerting pressure on communities and military positions in Cameroon's Darak district for over a year, aiming to extend control beyond its Tumbuma Mantiqa region in northeast Nigeria. A 5 February attack displaced over 2 000 people from Darak island, and the group has appointed three Cameroonian lieutenants to bring the area within its fold. ISWAP openly spreads propaganda at community gatherings, subjects locals to taxation and has attacked 10 military outposts in the area since January, prompting calls for reinforced operations and joint military action between Cameroon and Nigeria.

Chad's opposition faces systematic repression under Déby

Eight opposition leaders were sentenced to eight years in prison on 8 May for planning a march against governance problems, a day after the Supreme Court dissolved the Political Actors Consultation Group coalition. The jailed leaders join Succès Masra, imprisoned for 20 years in August 2025, leaving President Mahamat Idriss Déby's Patriotic Salvation Movement virtually unchallenged. Public demonstrations have been systematically banned for over six years, with around 200 protesters killed in October 2022, raising concerns about Chad's slide back to authoritarianism and potential return to one-party rule.
