Centre For Development And Enterprise

The Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) is an independent South African policy research and advocacy organisation focused on economic growth, development and democratic governance. Established in 1995, the centre conducts research and publishes reports on critical policy issues affecting South Africa's economic and social development. The CDE is headquartered in Johannesburg and operates as a nongovernmental think tank that engages with government, business, labour and civil society on matters of national importance. Its work spans areas including education, employment, land reform, mining, urban development and the investment climate. The organisation is known for evidence-based policy analysis and for convening stakeholders across the political and economic spectrum to debate development challenges. Ann Bernstein has served as the CDE's executive director, guiding its research agenda and public engagement. The centre publishes policy briefs, research reports and books that contribute to public discourse on South Africa's development trajectory. Its funding comes from corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors, and it maintains editorial independence in its research and advocacy. The CDE has played a significant role in shaping debates on economic policy, governance reform and the business environment in post-apartheid South Africa.
