Central Bank Of Nigeria

The Central Bank of Nigeria is the monetary authority and apex financial regulator of Nigeria. Established in 1958, the bank is responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy, maintaining price stability and managing the country's foreign exchange reserves. It is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, with branches across the country's six geopolitical zones. The central bank regulates and supervises the Nigerian banking sector, issues the naira currency and serves as banker to the federal government. Its mandate includes promoting a sound financial system, managing inflation and fostering economic development through credit allocation policies. The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate for a five-year term. Key functions include setting interest rates, determining reserve requirements for commercial banks and intervening in foreign exchange markets to stabilise the naira. The bank plays a central role in Nigeria's economic policy, particularly in managing the challenges posed by the country's dependence on oil revenues and the resulting volatility in foreign exchange earnings. It operates under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act and reports to the National Assembly on monetary policy implementation and the state of the financial system.
