Cell C

Cell C is a South African mobile telecommunications company and the country's third-largest mobile network operator. The company is headquartered in Johannesburg and provides mobile voice, data and messaging services to retail and enterprise customers across South Africa. Cell C operates as a mobile virtual network operator, relying on network-sharing agreements with other operators to provide coverage. The company has historically positioned itself as a challenger brand, competing against the two larger incumbent operators Vodacom and MTN. Cell C offers prepaid and contract packages, as well as business solutions including connectivity, cloud services and digital transformation offerings. The company has faced financial challenges in recent years, undergoing debt restructuring and recapitalisation efforts to stabilise its balance sheet. Ownership has changed hands multiple times, with various consortia and investment groups acquiring stakes in the business. Cell C has increasingly focused on digital services and partnerships with technology providers to diversify revenue streams beyond traditional mobile connectivity. The company was founded in 2001 and launched commercial services in 2002, becoming South Africa's first new mobile network operator in a decade at the time.
