The UN Trade and Development agency (Unctad) warned on June 30, 2026 that Cape Verde is among 61 vulnerable economies exposed to prolonged food and fuel cost increases after more than 100 days of severe shipping disruption through the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. Although Brent crude has fallen back to about $73 a barrel following an interim US-Iran agreement, Unctad said Cape Verde's heavy reliance on imported fuel has already driven up electricity, transport and food costs that could persist even as energy markets stabilise.
Agency flags food security risk for import-dependent householdsUnctad noted that food and transport systems typically recover more slowly than energy markets, and that a 5% rise in food prices can significantly increase the risk of childhood wasting in exposed countries. It called for international support to help the most affected economies recover from the shocks.
