Newmont's Red Chris mine in British Columbia has received regulatory approvals to transition from open-pit mining to a block caving operation, extending its lifespan into the mid-2040s and creating more than 1 800 construction jobs while boosting Canada's copper production by about 15%. Hudbay Minerals has broken ground at the New Ingerbelle expansion project at the Copper Mountain mine, which is projected to produce about 750 000 t of copper, 900 000 oz of gold and 5.5-million ounces of silver over the life-of-mine while securing more than 800 full-time jobs beyond 2040.
Seabridge KSM work continues as court orders fresh indigenous consultationThe Supreme Court of British Columbia has found that the Environmental Assessment Office's determination that Seabridge Gold's KSM project was substantially started was reasonable, but has ordered a 90-day consultation period with the Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha before the office reconsiders the determination. Seabridge has incurred an additional $208-million of expenditures on permanent works at KSM since January 2024, bringing total expenditures to $1.2-billion, and work will continue during the consultation process.
Osisko raises $300-million for Cariboo gold project developmentOsisko Development has closed offerings totalling $300-million in convertible senior notes at a 4.125% coupon to support development of the Cariboo gold project in central British Columbia, which is expected to produce 1.89-million ounces of gold over a ten-year mine life. The company will also propose a name change to Osisko Gold Group at its 23 June annual general meeting to better reflect its evolution toward a primary gold and precious metals-focused asset base in North America.
