Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein is a city in the Free State province of South Africa and serves as the province's capital and largest urban centre. The city is one of South Africa's three capital cities, functioning as the judicial capital and home to the Supreme Court of Appeal, the country's highest court for non-constitutional matters. Bloemfontein is located in the central interior of South Africa, positioned on the highveld at an elevation of approximately 1 400 metres above sea level. The city has an estimated population of around 520 000 people in its metropolitan area, making it the sixth-largest urban centre in South Africa. Bloemfontein's economy is anchored by government administration, judicial services, education, agriculture and related industries, with the surrounding Free State region being a major producer of maize, wheat and sunflowers. The city hosts the University of the Free State, one of the country's oldest tertiary institutions, and serves as a commercial and service hub for the central interior. Key infrastructure includes Bram Fischer International Airport and extensive road and rail connections linking the city to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Bloemfontein was founded in 1846 and served as the capital of the Orange Free State republic before becoming part of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The city's name, meaning "fountain of flowers" in Afrikaans, reflects its origins as a settlement around a natural spring. Bloemfontein remains an important administrative, judicial and educational centre in South Africa's economic landscape.
