Blade Nzimande

Blade Nzimande is a South African politician who has served in various ministerial roles within the national government. He is a member of the South African Communist Party and has been a prominent figure in South African politics since the democratic transition in 1994. Nzimande has held the position of Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, overseeing the country's tertiary education sector and science and innovation policy. His portfolio has included responsibility for agencies such as the Technology Innovation Agency and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He has been involved in initiatives to promote small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and to foster innovation and technology development in South Africa. Nzimande has also served as Minister of Transport in previous administrations. His political career has been marked by his advocacy for transformation in education and his efforts to align science and technology policy with broader economic development goals. He is known for his engagement with innovation ecosystems, including digital innovation precincts and technology commercialisation programmes. Nzimande's tenure has seen him champion initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between research institutions and industry, particularly in support of emerging entrepreneurs and startups.
