Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a decentralised digital currency that operates without a central bank or single administrator, enabling peer-to-peer transactions over a blockchain network. Launched in 2009 by an anonymous person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, it was the first cryptocurrency to solve the double-spending problem through cryptographic proof rather than trust in a central authority. Transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain, with new bitcoins created as a reward for miners who use computational power to validate and secure transactions. Bitcoin can be exchanged for other currencies, products and services, and its value fluctuates based on market demand and supply dynamics. The currency is divisible to eight decimal places, with the smallest unit known as a satoshi. Bitcoin has gained adoption as both a speculative investment asset and a medium of exchange, though its use remains subject to regulatory scrutiny in many jurisdictions. In South Africa, bitcoin and other crypto assets fall under the purview of financial regulators including the South African Reserve Bank, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority and the South African Revenue Service, with ongoing debate about their classification and appropriate regulatory treatment. The technology has sparked the development of thousands of alternative cryptocurrencies and has influenced discussions around monetary policy, financial inclusion and cross-border payments. Bitcoin's decentralised nature and pseudonymous transaction structure have raised concerns about money laundering and capital flight, prompting regulatory responses in markets worldwide. Despite volatility and regulatory uncertainty, bitcoin has established itself as the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation and continues to attract institutional and retail interest.
