Biofuels

Biofuels are renewable fuels derived from organic matter, including plant materials, agricultural crops and organic waste. The sector encompasses the production, processing and distribution of liquid and gaseous fuels intended to substitute or supplement fossil fuels in transport, heating and power generation. The two most common types are bioethanol, typically produced from sugar cane, maize or other starch-rich crops, and biodiesel, derived from vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled cooking oils. Biofuels are often blended with conventional petrol or diesel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on imported petroleum products. The industry plays a significant role in agricultural economies, offering an alternative revenue stream for crop producers and contributing to rural development. In South Africa, the biofuels sector has focused primarily on bioethanol from sugar cane and biodiesel from soya beans and sunflower, supported by government blending mandates and industrial policy frameworks. Key producing regions globally include Brazil, the United States, the European Union and India, where large-scale feedstock availability and supportive policy environments have driven growth. The sector faces ongoing challenges related to feedstock costs, land-use competition with food production, water availability and the need for consistent regulatory support. Biofuels remain central to many countries' energy transition strategies, particularly in decarbonising transport sectors where electrification is less immediately viable.
