Benoni

Benoni is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated on the East Rand of the Witwatersrand metropolitan area. The city lies approximately 26 km east of Johannesburg and forms part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Benoni has a population of over 150 000 residents and serves as an important industrial and commercial centre within the greater Johannesburg conurbation. The city's economy has historically been anchored by gold mining, which drove its early development and growth throughout the twentieth century. Today Benoni hosts a diverse industrial base including manufacturing, engineering, and agricultural processing facilities, with sectors such as conveyor belting, rubber products, and mining equipment production maintaining a significant presence. The city is home to established industrial parks and benefits from its strategic location along major transport corridors linking Johannesburg with the eastern regions of Gauteng. Benoni's infrastructure includes rail connections, proximity to OR Tambo International Airport, and access to national road networks, supporting both domestic and export-oriented industries. The area also features residential suburbs, commercial districts, and recreational facilities including golf courses and lakes formed from historical mining activities. Benoni was established in 1903 following the discovery of gold on the East Rand, and its name is derived from the Hebrew word meaning 'son of my sorrow', chosen by the wife of one of the original farm owners.
