Bamako

Bamako is the capital and largest city of Mali, located in the south-west of the country on the Niger river. The city serves as Mali's administrative, economic and cultural centre, with a metropolitan population of more than two-million people. Bamako is the hub of Mali's transport network, connected by road, rail and air to other West African capitals and regional centres. The city's economy is driven by trade, services, light manufacturing and informal commerce, with significant activity in textiles, food processing and metalworking. Bamako hosts the headquarters of national government institutions, foreign embassies and regional organisations. The port on the Niger river facilitates the movement of goods, while the Modibo Keita international airport links the city to destinations across Africa and beyond. Bamako has grown rapidly since independence in 1960, expanding from a colonial administrative outpost into a sprawling urban area. The city's strategic location and political significance make it a focal point in discussions of Sahel security, regional integration and economic development in West Africa.
