Athol Trollip

Athol Trollip is a South African politician and former leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape. He served as executive mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from 2016 to 2018, leading a coalition government in the metro. Trollip was a member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance for many years, representing the party in the National Assembly and holding various shadow cabinet positions. He lost the mayoral position in August 2018 following a motion of no confidence supported by opposition parties. After leaving the Democratic Alliance, Trollip joined ActionSA, a political party founded by Herman Mashaba in 2020. He has been active in ActionSA's parliamentary and electoral activities, contributing to the party's efforts to position itself as an alternative to the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance. Trollip's political career has been marked by his focus on governance issues, particularly at municipal level, and his advocacy for coalition politics in South Africa's evolving multiparty democracy. His experience in managing coalition governments has informed his ongoing political work and public commentary on local government and national politics.
