Asset Management

Asset management is the professional service of managing investments and financial assets on behalf of clients to meet specified objectives, typically growth, income or capital preservation. The sector encompasses institutional investors, pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, sovereign wealth funds and high-net-worth individuals. Asset managers make investment decisions across equities, bonds, property, commodities and alternative assets, constructing diversified portfolios aligned with client risk profiles and return targets. The industry operates through dedicated asset management firms, divisions within banks and insurance groups, and independent wealth managers. Revenue derives primarily from management fees calculated as a percentage of assets under management, with performance fees sometimes applied when returns exceed benchmarks. South Africa's asset management industry is well developed, with major players including Allan Gray, Coronation Fund Managers, Investec Asset Management and divisions of financial services groups such as Sanlam and Old Mutual. The sector is regulated by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, which enforces disclosure, conduct and prudential standards. Asset management plays a central role in channelling household savings into productive investment, supporting retirement provision and capital formation. The industry faces ongoing pressure from passive investment vehicles, fee compression and demands for environmental, social and governance integration. Global assets under management exceed $100-trillion, with the sector concentrated in the United States, Europe and increasingly Asia-Pacific.
