Aspen Pharmacare

Aspen Pharmacare is a South African pharmaceutical company that manufactures and distributes branded and generic medicines across multiple therapeutic categories. The company is headquartered in Durban, South Africa, and operates in more than 50 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Europe. Aspen is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers in the southern hemisphere. Its product portfolio includes anaesthetics, thrombosis treatments, antiretrovirals, infant nutritionals and a range of branded specialty medicines. The company has built a significant presence in emerging markets, where it supplies both innovator brands under licence and its own generic formulations. Aspen operates manufacturing facilities in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Germany and other locations, with a workforce of several thousand employees. Revenue is generated through a combination of direct sales, distribution agreements and licensing partnerships with multinational pharmaceutical companies. The company was founded in 1850 as a small dispensary in Durban and evolved through acquisitions and organic growth into a multinational enterprise, expanding its footprint particularly from the 1990s onward through strategic acquisitions of brands and manufacturing assets.
