Alaska

Alaska is a state within the United States, located in the far north-west of North America. The capital is Juneau, though Anchorage is the largest city and economic centre. Alaska's economy is dominated by natural resource extraction, particularly oil and gas from the North Slope, which generates substantial state revenue through production taxes and royalties. The state also has significant mining activity, including gold, zinc, lead, silver and critical minerals such as rare earths. Commercial fishing, particularly for salmon and pollock, remains a major industry, alongside tourism drawn by wilderness areas and national parks. Alaska's vast geography encompasses Arctic tundra, boreal forests, mountain ranges and extensive coastline along the Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. The state is sparsely populated, with fewer than 750 000 residents spread across the largest US state by area. Alaska's resource base and strategic Arctic location give it importance in US energy security and critical mineral supply chains. The territory was purchased from Russia in 1867 and became the 49th US state in 1959.
