Aaron Motsoaledi

Aaron Motsoaledi is a South African politician who serves as Minister of Home Affairs, a position he has held since May 2019. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and represents the party in the National Assembly. Before his current role, Motsoaledi served as Minister of Health from May 2009 to May 2019, a decade-long tenure during which he oversaw significant public health initiatives and reforms. His time as Health Minister was marked by efforts to expand access to antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and strengthen primary healthcare systems across South Africa. He also championed the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, a long-term policy initiative aimed at achieving universal health coverage. As Home Affairs Minister, Motsoaledi has focused on immigration control, border management, and the modernisation of identity and travel document systems. He has been vocal on issues of illegal immigration and the enforcement of South African immigration laws. Motsoaledi qualified as a medical doctor and practised in rural areas before entering politics, bringing clinical experience to his health policy work. He has been a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee and remains a prominent figure in debates over healthcare access, social services, and state capacity. His career reflects a sustained engagement with public health and administrative reform in South Africa.
