 Article Headline: WATER WARNING:
Abstract: Last week’s intervention by the Gauteng North High Court – giving the Gert Sibande municipality 72 hours to provide 17 000 citizens of Carolina, in Mpumalanga, with potable water – is a timely reminder of the downside risks associated with failing to move assertively and decisively to deal with the worrying acid mine water problem. Equally, it should offer something of a wake-up call to South Africa’s miners whose past and current activities are the cause of the scourge. Surely, the clean-up, as well as the funding thereof, should not and cannot be left to government and taxpayers alone.
