Zondereide strike continues

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed platinum producer Northam Platinum confirmed on Monday afternoon that the roughly 500 rock drill operators at its Zondereinde mine, who downed tools on April 4 in demand of a 38% increase in their monthly production bonuses, have yet to return to work.

The miner indicated that the work stoppage at the mine persisted, as the consultative forum that was constituted by its management, was continuing engagements with employee representatives to resolve the situation.

On Friday, the company announced that it had lost about R46.2-million in revenue as a result of the strike, with production losses amounting to 120 kg of metal in concentrate.

“The best outcome for all parties involved would require that all the affected employees return to work as soon as possible,” Northam said in a note to Mining Weekly Online.
