Project Description
The WWTW is one of the City of Cape Town’s (CoCT’s) largest-ever infrastructure projects, and will service lower-income households in the eastern part of the metro.
The project aims to increase the capacity of the WWTW from 72-million litres of water a day to 90-million litres a day.
A new preliminary treatment process and upgrading of the existing treatment modules will also ensure that the quality of the treated effluent being discharged is of an acceptable standard and complies with the licence conditions issued by the national Department of Water and Sanitation.
The current scope of work will result in the construction of a membrane reactor, sludge dewatering facilities, new inlet works, pumpstations, primary settling tanks and disinfection facilities.

Latest Developments
The WWTW has been handed over by the contractor to Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Contractors in the city are not named to protect them from extortion attempts by the so-called construction mafia.
According to city officials, the plant has shown an improvement in effluent quality, owing to membrane treatment technology that treats water to close to potable standards.
“In time, treated wastewater from this upgraded plant will be supplied to a state-of-the-art, new water scheme, to be built at the Faure Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir in the coming years,” Water and Sanitation MMC Zahid Badroodien has noted.
