Without question, Eskom’s new management severely misread the labour relations situation at the utility. As a result, they definitely provided the triggering for the aggressive industrial action that followed. Ironically, though, the workers targeted the wrong people – individuals who are cleaning up the mess created by others. A second irony is that the actions of labour have served to accelerate the death spiral already under way at Eskom; one that will ultimately lead to job losses.
