Client
The project is being developed by a consortium comprising Mainstream Renewable Power; Actis, through its Actis Energy 3 Fund; Thebe Investment Corporation; The IDEAS Managed Fund, managed by Old Mutual Investment Group; Futuregrowth Asset Management and Genesis Eco-Energy, in partnership with Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital; and local community members through established community trusts.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of three wind farms with a combined capacity of 360 MW in the Northern Cape.

The projects reached financial close in February this year and include:
• the 140 MW Khobab Wind Farm, located in the district municipality of Namakwa;
• the 140 MW Loeriesfontein 2 Wind Farm, located in the district municipality of Namakwa; and
• the 80 MW Noupoort Wind Farm, located in the local municipality of Umsobomvu.

A consortium led by Mainstream Renewable Energy was awarded the contracts for the wind farms by the Department of Energy under the third round of its Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Value
The wind farms represent an estimated investment of R9-billion. The debt for the projects has been arranged and underwritten by Barclays and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

Duration
Construction of the wind farms were expected to start in February this year.

Latest Developments
The three projects reached financial close in February this year.
