VinPro steps up soil consultation

VinPro now provides even more specialised advice following the addition of soil scientist Johan de Jager to the wine industry organisation’s consultation team.

Before joining VinPro, Johan was a soil scientist and agriculturist at SGS Nviro Crop in Potchefstroom. He specialised in soil surveys, but especially soil mapping and feasibility studies throughout South Africa, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique.

“Johan has extensive experience, which makes him a definite asset to the VinPro team,” says Francois Viljoen, manager of VinPro’s viticulture and soil consultation service.

VinPro’s soil scientist and specialist in geographic information systems (GIS), Johan de Jager and Heinrich Schloms, provide wine producers with a broad range of tools to enhance precision farming. These include GIS terrain analyses, as well as setting up farm and soil maps, block layouts and surfaces. Soil surveys can also be done to provide guidance with regard to soil preparation and drainage, fertilising and general soil maintenance.

The soil science and GIS team works closely with VinPro’s regional viticulture consultants and agricultural economists to provide each wine grape producer with a tailor-made solution.

VinPro is the representative organisation for close to 3 500 South African wine grape producers and cellars.
