European retail property group, Hammersons, on Thursday commenced trading on the JSE, adding R89-billion market capitalisation to the property and real estate sector.

Hammerson is a UK-headquartered real estate investment trust (Reit) with R170-billion of high-quality retail and leisure destinations predominantly located in the UK, France and Ireland, including over 41 shopping centres, as well as a platform of 15 premium outlets in the UK and around Europe.

CE David Atkins said this was an important event for the property group as its shares were admitted to the JSE, meaning it would further broaden the company’s global investor reach.

“Our business is in great shape and this listing will allow a wider pool of investors to participate in the company’s future returns. We look forward to building long-term relationships with existing and South African investors,” Atkins said.
