The University of Johannesburg (UJ) this week launched its College of Business and Economics (CBE).

The college, incorporating the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), houses six schools focusing on enhancing the profile of management education in Africa.

The schools aggregately serve 19 500 full-time students and another 6 600 part-time continuing education students, representing about 40% of UJ’s student enrolment.

“The scale and accessibility of the UJ CBE highlights the university’s drive to become an international university with the vision to serve Pan-African ideals,” said CBE acting executive dean Professor Daneel van Lill.

“Core to the CBE will be its newly established JBS, which, at its inception, is one of the largest business schools in Africa with over 6 000 students.”

Led by Professor Lyal White, JBS aims to develop successful African leaders and managers with a focus on context, building on international networks and research collaborations to become the “leading school of African management thinking and academic rigour”.

CBE is also home to the CBE School of Accounting, headed by Professor Amanda Dempsey; the CBE School of Consumer Intelligence and Applied Information Systems, led by Professor Mercy Mpinganjira; and the CBE School of Economics, led by Professor Hardus van Zyl.

The CBE School of Public Management, Governance and Public Policy, headed by Professor Christelle Auriacombe, and the CBE School of Tourism and Hospitality, headed by Dr Diane Abrahams, also fell under the umbrella of the CBE.
