Triton Knoll offshore wind farm project, England

Name and Location
Triton Knoll offshore wind farm project, England.

Client
RWE npower renewables.

Project Description
Triton Knoll is a proposed wind farm located off the east coast of England, about 32 km off the coast of Lincolnshire and 45 km from the coast of North Norfolk.

The exact size of the project has not been determined, but if the project is to proceed, it will generate between 600 MW and 900 MW of renewable energy.  This could provide enough renewable electricity to meet the average needs of between 550 000 and 800 000 average UK households each year.

The project is expected to be developed in two separate phases:
• the offshore array, which includes the wind turbines, meteorological masts, offshore substations and the cables that link the wind turbines to the offshore substations; and
• the electrical system, which includes the substation, underground cables, the offshore export cables and an electrical compound along the onshore cable route.

Value
Constructed in its entirety, the investment to be made by RWE is likely to exceed £3.6-billion.

Latest Developments
Plans for the Triton Knoll wind farm project have been revised. Work on the site design has resulted in RWE npower renewables deciding to progress the development with a reduced capacity, which ranges between 600 MW and 900 MW, rather than the maximum of 1 200 MW initially proposed.

More detailed design work on the onshore infrastructure has also taken place as part of the project review. This has resulted in significant reductions to the required onshore footprint of Triton Knoll. The new design reduces the footprint for the onshore substation by more than 50% and by 40% for the intermediate electrical compound.
A maximum of 8.6 ha will now be needed for the onshore substation, rather than 20 ha, and up to 1.8 ha would be needed for the intermediate electrical compound, rather than 3 ha.

RWE npower renewables will continue to undertake rigorous review and optimisation of the project as it progresses.
