Photovoltaic (PV) modules solutions and services provider Trina Solar has donated solar modules to Eldo Energy for the installation of the hybrid SunStar system, also known as PharoX, on top of Signal Hill in Cape Town.

The 5 kW rooftop system that was supplied to Eldo Energy was placed beside the SunStar structure and was storing energy in batteries, while also lighting up the structure at night.

Trina Solar noted that the SunStar was conceptualised by Cape Town artist Christopher Swift for the 2014 World Design Capital and would remain erected for 13 months.

After this period, the structure would be dismantled and the solar panels donated to a communal or social institution, which would save on its energy costs.

“Trina Solar is very happy to be part of this iconic project that does not only have symbolic value but will have a lasting benefit to several communities in Cape Town. It is a sign that solar energy has great potential in South Africa and that it can serve people in need,” Trina Solar Europe and Africa president Ben Hill said.
