Transnet Property, a division of Transnet, has reached an agreement with the Department of Human Settlements (DHS) with regard to housing displaced people at the Montclair Lodge, in Durban.

Transnet Property says this follows the illegal occupation of the building by displaced flood victim community members on July 23.

The division notes that, since then, its leadership has been in engagements with multiple stakeholders to resolve the matter.

In terms of the agreement, Transnet will make Montclair Lodge available to the department for six months from August 15.

The department says it will prioritise women, children and people with disabilities, and will take full responsibility for the management of the lodge and its related costs.

Transnet has welcomed the agreement, positing that this favours all parties, and that it ensures that members of the community are accommodated.

In due course, Transnet Property will enter into negotiations to formally sell the lodge, with the DHS to have the first right of refusal.
