Transnet delivers jet fuel from coast to OR Tambo airport through multiproduct pipeline

State-owned Transnet Pipelines has successfully delivered jet fuel from Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, directly to OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), in Gauteng, for the first time since the commissioning of the 24-inch Multi-Product Pipeline in 2012.

This follows the successful commissioning of the accumulator tanks at Jameson Park, in Gauteng, to receive the product and the repurposing of an existing line between Alrode and the airport.

The jet fuel arrived at the airport on specification, going entirely through the Transnet pipeline system, and is an additional measure to ensure security of jet fuel supply.

During the 2022 floods, jet fuel was transported in the Multi-Product Pipeline to ORTIA via the Natref refinery.

This is the first time Transnet has delivered jet fuel from the coast going entirely through the Transnet pipeline system, it said.

"This alternative route will be used while Natref has a planned maintenance shutdown, and to supplement the normal supply from Natref to Transnet clients," Transnet said.

"The successful delivery, achieved in collaboration with customers, demonstrates Transnet Pipelines’ capabilities as a reliable pipeline solution for the supply of jet fuel from the coast to ORTIA," it averred.
