State-owned Transnet has further committed to building and strengthening the country’s oceans economy with a further intake of trainees for its maritime training academy, the Maritime School of Excellence (MSoE), in Durban.
The intake of unemployed learners is part of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy and the majority of learners are absorbed into the employ of Transnet’s two maritime operational divisions – Transnet National Ports Authority and Transnet Port Terminals.
“The aim of this training is to create capacity for Transnet and industry. It also develops each participant and arms them with appropriate skills that prepare them to either start businesses or seek jobs in the freight handling sector,” Transnet said in a statement.
To date, Transnet has been able to absorb 80% of these learners upon completion of their qualification.
The training provided does not automatically entitle a trainee to a job at Transnet but gives them the theory and experience to participate in the oceans economy.
The customised training programmes are designed to ensure priority skills are in place, ahead of market demand.
The various courses on offer at MSoE are accredited by the Transport Education Training Authority, the South African Maritime Safety Authority, the Department of Labour, the Swedish Academy and the International Labour Organisation.
