South African-born and educated inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk unveiled his futuristic ‘Hyperloop’ high-speed transport concept last week (see inset picture). He believes the solar-powered solution – comprising air-propelled sealed capsules able to carry 28 passengers at a time at high speed along the interior of a steel tube – could reduce the travelling time between Los Angeles and San Francisco, which are more than 600 km apart, to only 35 minutes.
