Data centre provider Teraco has completed an expansion project at its DB1 facility, in Durban, which is now the largest data centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

The company says Durban is experiencing booming demand for data centre capacity, hence Teraco’s continued investment into data centre infrastructure in the province.

Durban is currently South Africa’s third-largest city with a population of more than three-million people and many digitally connected enterprises.

The newly expanded facility supports the growing demand by enterprises and cloud service providers for data centre capacity.

The expansion has doubled DB1’s capacity to 2.2 MW of critical power load. The facility now comprises 5 800 m2 of building structure accommodating more than 700 racks.

The DB1 facility is a strategic interconnection hub on the African subsea cable map, with direct access to the Seacom, EASSy, MÉTISS and soon-to-be-deployed 2Africa cable systems.

The facility is connected to the Teraco Campus in Isando, Johannesburg, through a range of carriers and diverse regional fibre routes, which enables clients to increase the number of partners they connect with and expand their reach into new markets.

The DB1 facility offers clients secure colocation and interconnection services, as well as the ability to leverage Teraco’s digital hubs in Johannesburg directly.

Enterprises have direct access to Platform Teraco, which is a rich ecosystem of 250 network providers, global cloud on-ramps, subsea cable systems, 100 managed service providers and direct peering at Africa’s largest Internet exchange point NAPAfrica, through the DB1 facility.

Organisations working to accelerate their digital transformation typically use Teraco to scale their information technology infrastructure dynamically, adopt hybrid multi-cloud architectures and interconnect with strategic business partners within the Platform Teraco ecosystem of global and local clients.

The DB1 facility has been the latest expansion for Teraco’s growing data centre platform, taking critical load capacity at Teraco’s facility to 186 MW. The Isando Campus comprises a 70 MW facility, the Bredell Campus a 64 MW facility and the Cape Town Capus a 50 MW facility.
