Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has set up a task team to investigate allegations against the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) boards.

The investigation was prompted by numerous complaints and allegations levelled against board members and the management of both institutions, alleging serious mismanagement in relation to corporate governance and management issues.

Noting the important role played by the two strategic institutions in the nuclear sector, Joemat-Pettersson believed these concerns had to be addressed and resolved. “If left unattended, they may adversely impact on the effectiveness of the board in overseeing and guiding Necsa and NRWDI operations,” she said in a statement.

The task team would investigate and report back to the Minister on all matters of concern. The members of the task team included officials from the departments of Energy, Mineral Resources, International Relations and Cooperation, as well as the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

The boards of both institutions have been requested to cooperate with the task team to carry out its work efficiently and effectively. The task team was expected to conclude its investigation and submit a report to Joemat-Pettersson on or before March 31.
