Suvilahti-Viikinmäki cable connection project, Finland

Name and Location
Suvilahti-Viikinmäki cable connection project, Finland.

Client
Helen Sähköverkko Oy.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a new double-circuit cable connection between the 110 kV Suvilahti and Viikinmäki switching substations to ensure reliable and sufficient electricity distribution capacity in the Helsinki city centre.

More than 36 000 m of cable will be installed in the road structure. The cables will be protected against mechanical damage through concrete elements and covers.

New technology is also planned for the cables, including continuous temperature control for the cable structure, which can be used for monitoring cable load even more accurately than it has been.

Protective pipes in which the cables will be pulled at a later date will be installed on the cable route.

It will be necessary to excavate pulling trenches at a later date for the cable pulling. This will allow for construction work on the cable route to be carried out in shorter sections, which will reduce disruptions during construction.
