PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Stanmore Coal has signed a foundation coking coal contract with an East Asian steel producer representing a "material portion" of the semi-soft coking coal to be produced from the Isaac Plains mine, in Queensland.
Isaac Plains, which was set to produce its first coal in April this year, was expected to produce some 3.3-million tonnes of coal over the next three years.
Stanmore MD Nick Jorss said on Friday that the company was pleased with the "significant" sales contract with one of the largest steel producers in Asia.
“This foundation contract provides a strong platform for Stanmore’s coking coal sales in the lead up to production. A number of other contracts are under negotiations with top-tier steel producers.”
Jorss expected that coking coal produced from Isaac Plains would assist with the creation of over 700 000 t/y of steel.
