South Africans should brace for stage one load-shedding from 17:00 to 22:00 on Thursday, Eskom said.

“This is due to increased electricity demand and a shortage of generation capacity resulting from technical faults at some of our power station units,” the power utility said in a statement.

The load-shedding is the first in a while as Eskom has managed to keep up its maintenance schedule without having to plunge South African households into darkness.

“Eskom would like to assure customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system and to ensure that maintenance is carried out in order to guarantee that our supply of electricity can be maintained in the long term.”

The power utility urged residents to use more energy efficient ways of keeping warm as the country experiences cold weather conditions.
