Innovative water-based dispersions to be introduced

NEW WATER-BASED TECHNOLOGY Synthomer makes a return to the American Chemical Society Exhibition

Latices and speciality emulsion polymers producer Synthomer is set to introduce its latest water-based products for coatings, construction and flooring adhesives at this year’s American Chemical Society Exhibition scheduled for March 13 to 17 at the San Diego Convention Centre.
Among the next generation of polymers on show will be water-based binders for wood floor coatings (Plextol W 1078), exterior trim paint (Plextol W 1080), waterproofing membranes (Lipaton SB 60B11) and binders for thin-film intumescent coatings (Emultex FR 728 and Emultex FR 797).

According to the company, these next-generation polymers facilitate the formulation of products that are more environment friendly and are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), alkylphenol ethoxylate (APEO) free, formaldehyde free and more sustainable in many aspects.

Plextol W 1078 and Plextol W 1080 are new multiphase acrylic dispersions for wood coatings featuring low coalescent demand and very fine particle size to give deep substrate penetration and a rich wood warmth. Both products demonstrate outstanding performance – for example, for water and chemical resistance, as well as long-term durability.

The new Emultex FR series of vinyl acetate copolymer binders complements Synthomer’s range of dispersions for intumescent coatings. Emultex FR 797 is designed to ensure that intumescent coatings develop an extensive but rigid insulating foam at high temperatures for longer protection of steel structures for up to 120 minutes. Both products feature high water resistance and film flexibility.

To help support the launch of these innovative products, Synthomer technical service manager for coatings Bob Foster will present two papers – ‘New polymer developments for water-based wood coatings’ and ‘Advances in water-based thin-film intumescent coatings’.

Synthomer develops and markets polymers used in a wide range of industries to create and enhance everyday consumer products.

The company has been in the emulsions market for paints and construction chemistry for decades and its depth of experience and focus on the development of innovative products make it an expert partner for the manufacture of paints, lacquers and chemical products for the building industry. Synthomer develops individual solutions for both decorative and functional coatings, as well as for building material finishes and construction adhesives.

This development of this next generation of polymer product is driven by the demand for products that meet its customers’ needs as well as increasingly demanding environmental standards, such as being low in VOCs, APEO free and formalde- hyde free. In this way, Sythomer’s products meet all relevant regulations without compromising quality or performance.
