Southern Palladium brings Baxter on board as chairperson

Southern Palladium incoming nonexecutive chairperson Roger Baxter

ASX- and JSE-listed Southern Palladium has appointed Roger Baxter as nonexecutive chairperson, effective January 1, 2024.

Baxter had been CEO of Minerals Council South Africa for eight years before recently retiring from the position. As council CEO, he guided the South African mining sector to achieve improved safety records and modernised the organisation to be more effective, agile and strategy-driven.

As founding chairperson of the World Platinum Investment Council, Baxter has experience in this sector, which will bode well for Southern Palladium.

Southern Palladium interim chairperson Mike Stirzaker says Baxter’s significant mining industry experience, coupled with his knowledge and understanding of mineral commodity markets and value chains, will add a depth of capability to the board as the company develops the Bengwenyama platinum group metals (PGMs) project, in the eastern limb of South Africa’s Bushveld Complex.

Baxter comments that Bengwenyama is one of the few remaining PGM development projects of significance globally and that it is transitioning well from exploration to development – which he looks forward to advance further.

Southern Palladium currently holds a 70% interest in the project and is in the process of delivering a diamond drilling programme and a prefeasibility study.

Stirzaker will revert to his former role as nonexecutive director effective January 1, 2024.

Stirzaker stepped in as interim chairperson after former chairperson Terence Goodlace resigned in May 2023 on the advice of a proxy advisory services company regarding the number of board positions he should hold.
