Free Market Foundation (FMF) associate and pioneering entrepreneur Herman Mashaba believes government is not doing enough to support small business.

In a presentation titled ‘Economic Freedoms of South Africa – The Contradictions’, on Wednesday evening, he said the country’s labour laws were negatively impacting small businesses.

“It is really unfortunate that our legislators and policymakers can pass laws totally ignoring the existence of small business in the country. In fact, I don’t think they even know that there is such a thing as small business,” he stated, adding that the labour dispensation, besides others, contributed to the country’s high unemployment rate.

Further, Mashaba highlighted that the threat to the rule of law was also a significant challenge.

Citing Zimbabwe, Mashaba further noted that, through land expropriation – a policy South Africa was considering – the neighbouring country had failed.

“I expected this country to be ahead of everyone in the world, but look at what happened to that beautiful country. To see that country being destroyed the way Mugabe destroyed it is beyond imagination.”
