The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has appointed Sinazo Tiya as the port security officer at the Port of Durban.

The role of port security officer is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of TNPA assets, people and port, in compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security code. Tiya is the port's first female port security officer.

Her security mandate also extends to port access control, minimising congestion in the port vicinity, monitoring compliance, as well as ensuring adherence to security operational policy and legislation through regular audits.

Tiya has more than ten years’ experience in the protection field and joined TNPA in 2019 as a security superviser for the Port of Durban’s Maydon Wharf precinct.

Prior to joining TNPA, she was a police officer, in Cape Town, which is where her passion for serving and protecting was ignited.

Tiya holds a National Diploma in Policing, a forensic investigation certificate, a National Qualifications Framework level 5 in policing, a Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority grade A and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Policing Practice.

Tiya aims to use her academic qualifications to develop and implement smart port traffic management to make the port more efficient, TNPA said.
